Venezuelan Luis Palencia has been documenting the signage of Miami through his Instagram account @Miami_Type. Through his images he has woven a photographic diary of Miami’s visual culture, capturing a variety of architectural and typographical styles. While Miami is well-known for its’ distinct Art Deco architecture, Palencia is interested in blurring references. “I love when I find modern typography styles on deco buildings because it creates a blend between those years and shows the actual Miami, which is much more a mix of styles.” So far his favorites are the Olympia Theater, a Miami landmark in many ways, and the Giveaway store in South Beach, that recently shuttered – a reminder of an earlier time.
